Medical surveillance and screening may be recommended or required based on job duties. Medical surveillance consists of services rendered by a physician or other licensed health care professional (PLHCP) for the primary and secondary prevention of occupational injuries and illnesses, including a review of occupational and medical history, physical exams, diagnostic and performance testing, vaccinations, and post-exposure treatment and prophylaxis. Job hazards that may require inclusion in the medical surveillance program include but are not limited to:
- Work with animals,
- Potential exposure to human blood and bodily fluids,
- Exposure to loud noise,
- Exposure to OSHA regulated chemicals and substances,
- Mandatory use of a respirator,
- Use of a Class 3-b or Class 4 laser, and
- BSL-3 work.
